‘No Strings’ Badminton is a huge success at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
30/11/2011

30 November 2011: Stoke Mandeville Stadium plays host to one of the first and very exciting ‘No Strings’ Badminton matches.

The No Strings Badminton Monday team won their first match 5 games to 4. Sue Rutson, Coordinator for the No Strings Monday session said:

“it was a fantastic battle of badminton with body’s flying all over the court. There were yells and of course war cries and the odd collision. Some rallies were extended periods of full exertion and the players fought hard to take and keep control. However hard the games were, or how challenging the rallies, everyone played within the spirit of the game with fairness and outstanding goodwill.”

Fun, fitness and friends describe some of the benefits from joining sessions, and each session continues to go that extra mile for every player offering the opportunity to experience some social and competitive play.

No strings Badminton has been such a huge success at Stoke Mandeville Stadium and is now welcoming the launch of exciting new ladies only session. This will launch on the 10th January and will be a 10-week course on Tuesday evenings between 8-9pm, a perfect time to get fit after all those festivities.

Ross Timms, the No Strings Coordinator for the Sunday evening ‘Family No-Strings’ session at Stoke Mandeville Stadium said:

“This new course comes hot on the heels of the men’s doubles competition. I believe the casual nature of the sessions, not only give the players the chance to get fit and play on a regular basis. It allows the opportunity to experience some organised competitive play.”

There are currently two sessions offered at the Centre: Sunday 6-8pm for all of the family, and Monday for adults 1-4pm. Both of which create a sense of friendly competition between the two sessions, and gives two playing opportunities.

Nina Bridge the Regional Officer for Badminton England said:

“This is the first No Strings Badminton friendly match in the area and we’ve set a president for others to follow. The success of the Badminton is down to the fantastic staff and coordinators at the Stadium who help players to enjoy the sessions every week”.

Stoke Mandeville Stadium Goes Green!
21/10/2011

Stoke Mandeville Stadium on Guttmann Road in Aylesbury is going green this December as it invests in updating the swimming pool lighting for a more eco-friendly system.

The new lighting is expected to reduce energy consumption by 75% year on year and help the local sports and leisure facility reduce its carbon footprint.

In order to install this new lighting system, the swimming pool programme will be slightly affected. Week commencing 5th December, the pool will be closed from 7am until 4pm each day. However, it will re-open at 4pm for the Swim School classes and will remain open for the rest of the evening. A normal pool programme will resume on Saturday 10th December.

Ian Seabrook from Stoke Mandeville Stadium says: “This work is urgently required from a health and safety point of view – to improve pool hall visibility and of course to help us reduce our carbon footprint. We appreciate the support and patience of our swimmers during this period of necessary works. The end result will be worth it.”

Stoke Mandeville Stadium achieves Hospitality Assured – the standard for service & business excellence
17/10/2011

The national centre for wheelchair sport and Aylesbury’s leading local leisure centre on Guttmann Road has just been re-awarded and reaccredited with the Hospitality Assured standard - the definitive standard for service and business excellence in hospitality and the only standard that focuses on the customer experience.

The centre achieved an overall score of 70.9% which is an increase of 1% from the last assessment and is an excellent result, which followed a rigorous reaccreditation process using the revised nine key steps, which examined how well the business operates in areas as diverse as business planning and strategy, to training and development of employees, through to delivery of service.

The 70.9% achieved by Stoke Mandeville Stadium is one of the highest scores achieved by similar organisations in the country and highlights the hard work that has been put in by the team at the Stadium, in partnership with WheelPower – the national charity for Wheelchair sport.

Ian Seabrook, business development manager at Stoke Mandeville Stadium said: “We are absolutely delighted to be reaccredited. This prestigious award demonstrates our continued commitment to improvement and to provide the highest quality sports, facilities and services. Our aim has always been to make Stoke Mandeville Stadium a World Class facility that serves both performance athletes, visitors to Aylesbury and the local community. Given the challenging nature of the Hospitality Assured standard, this says a lot about the culture of customer service which is embedded throughout the whole team.”

The Institute of Hospitality, owners of the Hospitality Assured Standard, commented:

"The assessors were impressed with the developments of business strategies and plans that will enable the organisation to offer improving services to its existing customer base, as well as to new markets. The management team has been strengthened significantly, and the estate is in the throes of major improvement work. Of particular note was the close working relationship with the organisations primary client, WheelPower, which the assessors felt was an example of excellent partnership-working, and an area of best practice. All of these put Stoke Mandeville in a great position to even further raise their game!

“This award assures our customers that we provide services and facilities that are nationally accredited and at a very high level. I would like to thank all the staff at the centre who continue to do such an outstanding job each day”

Celebrate the summer with Badminton at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
22/08/2011

Stoke Mandeville Stadium on Guttmann Road in Aylesbury is working in partnership with Badminton England to encourage more local people to play and enjoy badminton. The home of wheelchair sport and community leisure hub is launching a national badminton programme called – No Strings Badminton in a bid to promote badminton to adults and families. There are currently 535,000 adults playing badminton once a week in England and this initiative aims to increase this number to 605,000 adults playing at least once a week by 2013.

Research has shown that common barriers to participation in badminton include no partner to play with, exclusivity in clubs in terms of standard of play, commitments to annual club memberships and a general feeling of intimidation to play. No strings badminton has been created to help overcome these barriers to enable more people to get involved and enjoy playing.

The programme is a semi-structured pay and play opportunity for the casual badminton player. All ages and abilities are welcome and there is no commitment (no annual fees). There will be a playing partner guaranteed at all sessions as well as a co-ordinator to welcome new players and offer hints and tips.

Ross Timms, No Strings Family Session co-ordinator at Stoke Mandeville Stadium says: “No Strings badminton is all about fun, friends and fitness. The family pay and play sessions are open to families aged 11+ and all playing abilities are welcome, making it easy for you to dust off your racket and join in the fun. Your co-ordinator will welcome you on arrival and get you straight into the action, rotating the play and pairing you with players of similar ability or different levels to offer you a challenge. The sessions are excellent value and there are no additional fees to pay and the free registration gives you access to some great promotions too!”

Nina Bridge, Regional Officer at BADMINTON England says: “No Strings Badminton is a great opportunity for people that have not played in years to come and give it a go. It’s a fun and friendly environment with a coordinator to take you through your first steps. I’m so excited we could bring these sessions to Aylesbury!”

The family no strings badminton session will run from Sunday 4 September between 6.00pm – 8.00pm, costing £4.00 per playing adult and £3.00 for under 16s. Sessions for adults (16+) run on Mondays between 2.00pm – 4.00pm, costing £4.00 per playing adult.

The aim is to shoot as close to the centre of the target as possible, from the outside edge of the circle awarding the shooter one point to the middle scoring ten points. Target shooting is a highly technical sport that requires incredible concentration and consistency. The ten shot finals create incredible tension as scores are announced after each shot and the winner can often be decided by the last pull of the trigger.

Stubbs, Richard Hennahane and Eric Thomas won a tense men's compound team final against Korea – always ahead, but having to fight off a determined challenge from their opponents, before finally securing the world championship with their last three arrows.

That gold medal made up for Stubbs' disappointment at losing the individual final to Switzerland's Philippe Horner, and later missing out on gold in the mixed team final, when he and Brown were beaten by Russia.

But two gold medals and three silvers was hailed as a great week's work by Archery GB Paralympic Head Coach Tim Hazell.

He said: "We've had a fantastic week, and returning home with two golds and three silvers is just superb. Dani has proved beyond doubt that she's the best in the world, while John was in great form, but Horner was just a bit better.

"But I was delighted that John finally got that gold in the team final, and I'm delighted for Richard and Eric. This is their reward for incredible hard work, not just during the week, but in the months leading up to this championship.

“I’m so proud of all our archers, it’s been a great team effort, and there were some emotional moments.

"Now we're all looking forward to coming to Stoke Mandeville in September, a venue that we all enjoy, and where we've been very successful in international events," said Hazell. "We're all looking to continue the momentum, and those who missed out on medals in Turin will be even more determined to make up for it at Stoke Mandeville, so it's a big week for us."

Celebrate the summer with Badminton at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
06/07/2011

Ian Seabrook from Stoke Mandeville Stadium says: “We’re pleased to be offering this new programme to the community. The sessions promise to be fun and friendly and will be suitable for all abilities. Badminton is a fun sport and we hope more people will come along and give it a go.”

Stoke Mandeville Stadium plays host to weekend of International Competition
20/05/2011

Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the home of disability sport and the birthplace of the Paralympic Games recently played host to a full programme of international competition at its facility on Guttmann Road in Aylesbury.

A week long Finnish Wheelchair Rugby Training Camp was concluded with a scintillating match against their GB counterparts and The 4 Nations Parabadminton Series 2011 English Championships entertained crowds.

On the Badminton courts a weekend of top-quality and exhilarating competition came to a thrilling conclusion after a full weekend of badminton was played and it was the English players who stole the show, winning an 23 out of the 25 Gold medals available and only missing out when Scotland’s Connor McFarlane took the Men’s Standing Half-Court Singles over William Smith (Nld) and Niall McVeigh (Ireland) overcame Andrew Martin (Kent) after a three game battle in the final of the Dwarf Men’s Singles.

Home advantage was evident in the Men’s Wheelchair singles, as both the Class 1&2 and Class 3 Gold medals were taken by members of Phoenix BC, based at Stoke Mandeville. Martin Rooke (Bucks) defended the Class 3 title he won at the Scottish Championships in February, triumphing 21-17, 21-13 over Meva Singh Dhesi (Mdx). Denny Vettom looked confident as he took the Class 1&2 Singles Gold for the first time, overcoming Owen Kilburn in straight games 21-16, 25-23. Vettom couldn’t quite secure another Gold as he and Phoenix club-mate Phillip Tew (Bucks) went down to Rowan Crossman and David Follett (Devon) 23-21, 21-12 in the final of the Wheelchair Combined Men’s Doubles.

Amongst the impressed on-lookers over the weekend were England internationals Sarah Walker and Andy Ellis, who as well as awarding medals and signing autographs were also called into action in the umpire’s chair!

Badminton England Disability Manager Tom Webster was delighted with the weekend’s events and said: “The Championships was a fitting conclusion to the domestic Parabadminton season, at a stunning venue for disability sport. The standard of play was exceptional and I’m sure everyone in attendance was impressed with the skill, athleticism and camaraderie on show. The atmosphere of the 4 Nations really is unparalleled. We had a record entry in the physical disability categories and it’s great to see so many new players on show. The game continues to grow, particularly through the hard work of coaches, players and the Inclusive Clubs to grow Parabadminton. The players’ focus will now turn to Dortmund and the German International Parabadminton Open in June, and I’m sure they will all perform with distinction.”

While in other areas of the centre Finnish Wheelchair Rugby team concluded its week long training camp with a match against the GB Wheelchair Rugby team in front of a crowd of more than 100 fans. It was an exciting and very close match and Finland narrowly lost 49 to 52.

Prior to the Wheelchair rugby match the team made use of the first class, specialised training facilities at the centre and spent at least six hours each day within the centre making use of the gym to build on the team’s fitness and the sports halls to work on technique and team play. The players and staff from Finland were pleased with the sporting facilities as well as the purpose built accommodation all within the same location.

Tommi Ojanen, Head Coach of Team Finland Wheelchair Rugby said: "My players and staff enjoyed a great training week with Team GB at Stoke Mandeville Stadium. During this week we trained and played hard in the start of preparation to European Championships 2011 and qualification to London Paralympic Games 2012. The closeness of accommodation and sport facilities made it easy to have an effective training week."

Ian Seabrook, Business Development Manager at Stoke Mandeville Stadium said: “It was great to welcome the teams and players to our centre for the training camps and the Parabadminton Championships. This weekend demonstrated just have perfect Stoke Mandeville Stadium is at hosting events, tournaments and training camps for the benefit of the athletes but also at creating a sense of community amongst disabled and able bodied people. There was a great atmosphere with members of the community cheering on our Paralympic hopefuls and International teams.”

The countdown to the ultimate sporting competition has begun - tickets have been bought, East London is being transformed and the capital is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the World's elite athletes. In 2012 all eyes will on Olympic legends Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps, however little is known about the athletes competing at the Paralympics two weeks later. It's the ultimate crowd pleaser, combining the best elements of rugby, basketball and american football - only with bigger collisions! Players have both upper and lower limb disabilities, but what they lack in function, they make up in aggression, speed and physical determination.

We would like 150 enthusiastic supporters to experience this thrilling game, and help spur on GB to victory. Doors open at 2pm and the game will finish by 5pm. We hope this event helps increase awareness of disability sport and encourages more people to come down to the Stadium and try out the great range of sports we have to offer.”

Lindsey Horton, from Tourism South East said, “We are very proud to be involved in this event. It sits very well with our aim to become Britain’s most accessible region in preparation for London 2012 including the improvement of facilities, levels of service and welcome for the disabled and their families and friends”.

There are around 75 shooters taking part in this competition from 15 nations around the globe including Thailand, USA, Poland and Great Britain.

The recent Shooting World Championships in Croatia showed the British team to be on great form, winning two silver and two bronze medals. Great Britain is now one of the most highly respected nations in Paralympic Shooting which gives the British team great confidence for the World Cup.

Pasan Kularatne, head coach and performance manager for the GB Team said “I am feeling confident about the World Cup and I am looking forward to it. The athletes are all training hard and I think it will be a very exciting competition.”

Matt said, “I am very exciting about the World Cup. It’s a great opportunity to play against people in my own country and I have been shooting well in my training sessions so am feeling confident.”

There are two main categories for disabled shooting, SH1 which is disability not affecting the upper limbs, and SH2 where there is some upper limb impairment. SH2 shooters place their rifles on a spring loaded stand when shooting. The event will feature 10 metre target shooting in both rifle and pistol disciplines. The aim is to shoot as close to the centre of the target as possible, from the outside edge of the circle awarding the shooter one point to the middle scoring ten points. The athletes make it look incredibly easy, but the accuracy required to achieve a high score is extremely difficult to achieve with one slight wobble causing you to go off target.

The event also aims to get local people involved with a community programme including school taster sessions during the event and a volunteer scheme.

Ian Barham, Buckinghamshire manager for the 2012 games said, “We recruited local volunteers to support the event. The volunteers will receive pre-event training in a number of issues relating to event management and accessibility issues. If you are interested, a number of opportunities still remain to support this event. If you would like to be involved please contact Ian Barham on 01296 585184 or email ibarham@bucks2012.org

Stoke Mandeville welcomes Olympic Mascots for Youth Games
29/06/2010

Stoke Mandeville Stadium welcomed more than 500 children from across Buckinghamshire on the 26th June for the Bucks Youth Games; a festival of sport for children in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games.

Both primary and secondary children from across the county were able to try their hands at lots of different sports and get some great tips from sporting heroes Danny Crates, Paralympic Gold Medallist, Bobby White GB Handball Team Goalkeeper, Andrew Daniels GB sprint canoeist and Georgina Callingham from the Paralympic Target Shooting Squad, who were on hand throughout the day. Stoke Mandeville Stadium also welcomed special guests Wenlock and Mandeville, the official 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascots.

Organised by the Bucks and Milton Keynes Sports Partnership (Bucks Sport), the Games has been granted the prestigious London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the London 2012 Games, and which aims to inspire young people to become a member of a local sports club and overall enjoy sport.

Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, commented, “Projects like the Bucks Youth Games are enabling people in Buckinghamshire to make positive life changes.”

Blair MacGillivray, Regional Manager of Sport England commented, “‘It was a great privilege for the Leisure Connection team at Stoke Mandeville Stadium to host this major sporting event and to welcome all of the sporting heroes including Wenlock and Mandeville on their first stop before their exciting UK tour.”

Mary McAnally, LOCOG Member for the South East of England and the Deputy Chair of the South East Partnership (SEP), added: “This has been the 2012 mascots’ first visit to the South East, and what a fitting occasion they have found in the Bucks Youth Games and Stoke Mandeville. Together with the sporting champions, Wenlock and Mandeville have inspired a new generation of disabled and able-bodied young people and their communities to participate in sport under the Olympic and Paralympic values.”

The Games are not just about the young participants. This special event highlights the variety of ways everyone can get involved in sport and enjoy it. The team coaches and managers, Local Authority sports development officers, competition managers, event organisers and volunteers, and hundreds of guests, parents and spectators, all contributed to the success of the Bucks Youth Games.
