Set deep in the New Forest, among tall conifers and scented pines, this grand country house may come as a surprise. Steeply pitched roof, redbrick chimneys and leaded windows, the design is a blend of Tudor and Gothic, old and new, the romantic and the eccentric. It could be a country palace or the set from a period film, however the inside remains a house filled with life - and more than a little luxury.
Once a keeper’s lodge, the Rhinefield House we see today was largely built in 1887 by the newly married Walker-Munros. They took a ‘no expense spared’ approach, fitting out the house with chandeliers, intricate carvings and unique touches. While the family left many years ago, today the house still has that homely, easygoing feel and hosts a generous 50 hotel bedrooms.
