The Jacobean style country house hotel dates back to 1866 and was built as a Calendar House. It was converted to a hotel in 1929 with 78 stylish en-suite bedrooms. In 1960, the hotel was owned by British Transport Hotels until 1983 when it was bought by Venice Simplon Orient Express Hotels. In 1990 the Yamada Corporation of Japan purchased the property. It was acquired by the Menzies Group of hotels in 2003.
The luxury hotel is widely renowned for its championship 18 hole golf course and in 2006 transformed the coaching house into a luxury state of the art Spa at a cost of £7 million.
