Highgate House employee to take on Kilimanjaro for the Northampton Hope Centre
23/08/2018
An employee from Highgate House in Northamptonshire is set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the Northampton Hope Centre.

Sean Coxon, who is Client Engagement Manager at Highgate House, will be heading to Tanzania from 21st-29th September with his partner Angela to take on the 8 day trek to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, where he will be raising money for the hotel’s charity of the year, the Northampton Hope Centre.

The Hope Centre provides support for disadvantaged and homeless people in Northampton for over 40 years. As well as giving practical support, The Hope Centre focuses on helping people to help themselves, providing support and services that will enable individuals to take back control of their own lives.

Sean, who is hoping to raise over £500 for the charity through his Just Giving page, will be following the most scenic route of Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route. It will take him 7 days to climb and 1 day to descend, covering a distance of 31.4 miles and reaching an altitude of 5895 metres.

Speaking about the challenge Sean said:

“I am really excited about the prospect of standing on the Roof of Africa. I am not a climber but I do love pushing my boundaries and taking on challenges, they don’t come much bigger than scaling the tallest free standing mountain in the world. Too many people spend their lives living outdoors and face far greater challenges so when Highgate House selected the Northampton Hope Centre as their nominated charity it seemed appropriate to do something significant like this to contribute towards their fundraising.”

Tanya Haji-Miller, Community Fundraiser at the Northampton Hope Centre, said:

“We are very grateful to Sean for taking on this epic challenge to raise funds for Hope. Our partnership with Highgate House is once again proving to be very fruitful. Every penny that Sean raises will go towards helping those who are homeless, disadvantaged and living in poverty in our community. Without the support of the local community, we couldn’t continue supporting our service users in the way we do. Good luck Sean, and thank you, from everyone at Hope.”

Sundial Group’s two meeting venues, Highgate House in Northamptonshire and Woodside in Warwickshire have both been awarded ‘VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation' by BDRC Continental for delivering consistently exceptional customer service in 2015.

BDRC Continental is the UK’s largest market research consultancy, and their VenueVerdict survey featured around 375 meeting venues and hotels across the UK and Ireland.

This is the second year running that Highgate House and Woodside have achieved the Gold Standard Accreditation, while the group’s Surrey based venue, Barnett Hill, has achieved the Highly Commended Accreditation.

Based on customer feedback, these accreditations are testament to Sundial Group’s continued dedication to providing exceptional customer service at its three meeting venues.

Some of the comments which contributed to the accreditations include:

“Your customer care is always exemplary.”

“The team are so friendly and helpful - all our guests comment on it, and it makes our time there so much more enjoyable.”

“All your staff are a credit to your company.”

“Very efficient/very friendly - smiley faces everywhere!”

Tim Chudley, Managing Director of Sundial Group, said;

“We are delighted that Highgate House and Woodside have achieved Gold once again and that Barnett Hill has been Highly Commended. The accreditations are fantastic recognition for all of our teams, and it makes them all the more rewarding given that they are the result of customer feedback.”
Sundial Group Reports a 20% Swing from Day Meetings to Residential
21/01/2016
Sundial Group has reported a reversal of previous booking patterns, with a 20% swing in bookings from day events to longer residential meetings. This is in stark contrast to an eight year trend of increasing demand for day meetings.

Comparative booking patterns between 2015 and 2016 at Sundial’s three venues; Highgate House, Barnett Hill and Woodside, indicate that meeting planners are moving back to holding extended events, often adding private dining and team building, to enhance their meeting experiences.

Tim Chudley, Managing Director of Sundial Group believes that meeting planners aren’t just looking for longer meetings; they’re looking for more meaningful ones and environment matters now more than ever. Chudley said:

“Taking delegates away from the city and from the distractions of the workplace into more natural settings is often the first step in generating receptive thought and creativity and helps to deliver longer-lasting, more impactful results. Whilst some elements of day meetings can be replaced by technology the real value of face to face comes from a more immersive experience. It’s great to see this on the increase.”

Sundial Group Shortlisted for Family Business of the Year 2016

Sundial Group has been shortlisted for the Midlands Family Business of the Year Award 2016.

Organised by Family Business United, the awards, now in their fourth year, recognise the diversity, strength and depth of family firms across the UK and seek to highlight the contribution that family firms make to the UK economy.

The Sundial story began back in 1964 when Diana and Michael Chudley bought Highgate House in Northamptonshire and transformed it into a home for their nine children, whilst also running it as a guest house. It went on to become one of the first country house conference centres of its kind in the UK and the family later acquired two additional county venues; Woodside in Warwickshire and Barnett Hill in Surrey.

Along with three dedicated meeting venues, Sundial Group has grown over the last 50 years to include a team building company and a venue finding agency. Today, it continues to be run by members of the Chudley family and is award-winning in customer service, value for money, food and industry leadership.

Sundial is amongst 11 finalists in the Midlands category and results will be determined through a combination of a judging panel and an online vote for the People’s Choice Award, determined solely by the public. To vote for Sundial Group, visit http://www.familybusinessunited.com/resources/family-business-of-the-year-regions/midlands-and-east-anglia/

Tim Chudley, Managing Director of Sundial Group, said:

“Our family values are at the heart of everything we do here at Sundial Group, so we’re thrilled to be shortlisted for the Family Business Awards. It is fantastic recognition for us, especially as it acknowledges the support from all of our family members and shareholders over the years. Now that we’ve been shortlisted, we’d be really grateful if everyone could take the time to vote for us.”

Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United, said:

"We are delighted to be able to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do."

The winners will be crowned during an awards ceremony at the May Fair Hotel in London on June 2nd.
Sundial Venues Achieve High Sustainability Rating
02/12/2015
During a week when Climate Change has very much been on the public agenda with the COP 21 summit in Paris, Sundial Group is delighted to have achieved a high sustainability rating by CDP, an independent organisation which helps companies measure their environmental impact.

For a company such as Sundial Group, which runs conferences and events in country house venues, the issue of climate change and energy efficiency has always been a particular challenge. Notably, because its venues are historic buildings which date back to a time long before the term ‘carbon footprint’ was coined. Sundial’s challenge is to retro-fit low carbon facilities and services into their buildings whilst retaining and preserving their heritage.

CDP’s assessment was two-fold. It first scored Sundial Group based on the quality and completeness of its response, of which it achieved 94% (vs a CPD SME average score of 60%).

By achieving over 50% in levels of response, Sundial qualified for CPD to go on and assess and rank them in a performance band. Out of a range of scores from A-E, Sundial ranked B (vs an average SME ranking of D).

The positive assessment gave Sundial a firm indication of its sustainability performance and also helped to provide greater focus on climate change for the business. Tim Chudley, Sundial Group’s Managing Director, said:

“The exercise of completing the CDP report was in itself a valuable process of analysis and review and has already provided us with a number of takeaways to help us improve our position on climate change further. I would encourage other companies to do the same. I’m told that as first year submissions these scores are pretty good but we will not be resting on our laurels, there is still lots to do.”
Sundial Group Hosts Learning and Development Forum
26/11/2015
Creativity, meeting design and outdoor space is key in appealing to Generation Y for events.

This was one of the key talking points at Sundial Group’s Learning and Development Forum held at Highgate House in Northamptonshire this November.

Speakers Rob Davidson, Director at MICE Knowledge, and James Bland, Director at BDRC Continental, lead the forum to discuss designing events for Generation Y and how to get a return on investment.

Rob Davidson’s session focused on Generation Y participants, focusing on what they want to experience at meetings and other business events. More interactivity with each other and with speakers, more immersive and multi-sensory events, shorter and more engaging presentations, and venues that offer natural daylight, outdoor areas and chill-out zones – these are some of the items on Generation Y’s wish-list.

“If we don’t adapt meetings to satisfy the preferences of this generation, they will simply vote with their feet and stay away from business events. By 2025, Generation Y will constitute 75% of the workforce, so we need to start implementing those changes now”.

James Bland provided a brief introduction to one of the leading methodologies for calculating Return on Investment on events; talking through the six stages of the process devised by Jack Phillips and the ROI.

“Proving the value of meetings and events is, on the face of it, a difficult task. However, once you get into the right mind-set, you’ll see that anything can be measured and anything can be quantified. It’s just a case of picking the right tool for the job, and being sensible and realistic in your approach.”

The overnight event was attended by 22 L&D professionals from organisations across the UK. This is the 2nd Learning and Development Forum hosted by Sundial Group, with the first event taking place earlier this year at the group’s Surrey based venue, Barnett Hill. The feedback from delegates has been fantastic with demand for another forum to take place next year.

This is the third consecutive year that the hotel has retained the 4 Star rating.

Visit England's ‘Quality in Tourism assessment' is used to provide consumers with guidance on the quality of accommodation across the UK, including facilities and services to make potential guests aware of what they can expect before they make a booking.

Highgate House Strikes Gold Once Again
13/07/2015
Sundial Group's Northamptonshire based hotel and conference centre, Highgate House, has received ‘VenueVerdict's Gold Standard Accreditation' for Q2 by BDRC Continental, the UK's largest independent research consultancy.

The accreditation, based on customer feedback results from July 2014 to June 2015, is testament to the venue's ongoing dedication to providing exceptional customer service.

BDRC Continental obtained feedback from around 360 participating meeting venues and hotels in the UK and Ireland. Highgate House is amongst 32 venues that have achieved the Gold Standard accreditation.

Sundial Group's Managing Director, Tim Chudley, said:

"Retaining 100% Gold Standard at Highgate House is wonderful recognition of the focus that Sundial people give to providing the perfect environment for our clients and their meetings. This feedback and benchmarking lies at the heart of our service excellence strategy."
500,000 Honeybees Check In at Sundial Group
15/06/2015
Sundial Group is buzzing with excitement after installing bee hives at each of its three meeting venues.

Over 150,000 honeybees have each arrived at Highgate House in Northamptonshire, Woodside in Warwickshire and Barnett Hill in Surrey, taking up residence in three specially constructed hives within the grounds.

The hives, managed by bio-diversity champions Plan Bee, are part of the group’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment, whilst helping to reverse the decline in bee population. Deemed as the ‘world’s hardest workers’, the bees also reflect Sundial’s values and dedication to its customers.

They will be accompanied by bee-keeping lessons and ongoing support, allowing everyone at Sundial the opportunity to become actively involved with the everyday life of the bees. Each venue will also receive its very own honey produced on-site by the Sundial bees which will be made available to customers.

Bees are tireless pollinators of trees, plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits. Not only are they essential to the health of our eco-system; they are vital to the world’s agricultural economy. 90% of food worldwide is provided by just 100 crop species. 71 of these are dependent on honey bees, so the serious decline in bees in the UK is a threat to future food supplies.

Sundial’s Group’s Managing Director, Tim Chudley, put on his bee suit to welcome the new arrivals:

“The hospitality sector is an extremely competitive one, with customers seeking excellence in both service and products. Customers now expect providers to be both ethical and sustainable. Supporting the declining bee population is our way of putting something into the environment, and making use of our extensive grounds. An added bonus for our customers is that they will benefit from enjoying the highest quality honey, made in partnership with Sundial.

Having already chosen BeeKind as our toiletry products of choice across all three of our venues, installing our own bee hives was the next logical step for us. Bees really resonate with Sundial and our hard-working ethos – like us, they get results!”

Designed to help make meetings more creative and engaging, the toolkit consists of a range of innovative stimuli that can be used as ice breakers or meeting energisers, to maximise meeting productivity at Highgate House in Northamptonshire, Woodside in Warwickshire and Barnett Hill in Surrey.

Following a huge demand for the use of pipe cleaners, which Sundial introduced as meeting stimulus last year, the toolkit will provide meeting hosts and trainers with a greater range of fun activities, all of which will be provided as a complimentary part of their meeting package.

Mia Butler, Director of Sales at Sundial Group, said:

“Our customers are requiring more from their meetings than ever. They’re no longer looking to venues to just host their meetings, they want to be engaged and inspired. Our innovative toolkit has been designed to provide that inspiration, with plenty of ideas to help make even the most functional meeting creative and interactive. Our meeting rooms are no longer just professional work spaces, they’re unique learning and development environments!”

20/01/2015
Northamptonshire based business, Sundial Group, made a clean sweep as its chefs scooped first, second and third place at the 2014 UK Copper Skillet Competition, run by the International Association of Conference Centres (IACC).

Iain Miller, Head Chef at Warwickshire venue, Woodside, was awarded 1st place, Mitchell Leech, Senior Chef de Partie at Woodside, scooped 2nd place and was also declared junior category champion, while Lee Gaskins, Head Chef at Northamptonshire venue, Highgate House, received 3rd place.

On Thursday 8th January, the three chefs battled it out in a ‘cook off' at Wyboston Lakes in Bedfordshire to become IACC's UK Champion. They were each given 30 minutes to produce a single dish from a mystery basket of proteins, dairy and grocery items.

This is the 4th time a Sundial chef has won the competition and the 2nd time Iain Miller has scooped the UK title, having previously won the competition in 2013. Robert Budd, Sous Chef at Barnett Hill, won the competition in 2014 and Lee Gaskins at Highgate House, received the award in 2007.

Iain and Mitchell will now go on to represent the UK at the European heats in Copenhagen next month. The winners from the European competition will then go on to represent the UK at IACC's prestigious Global Copper Skillet competition in Florida at the end of April.

The awards, which took place on Thursday 13th November at Nottingham Trent University, are organised by The Wilson Organisation and showcase the achievements of the region’s best run family businesses and their leaders.

The Midlands is home to almost half-a-million family businesses, and all entries this year demonstrate the exceptional pedigree of the region’s family businesses.”

With 50 years experience in the hospitality industry, Sundial Group is owned and managed by the Chudley family. Sundial Group Shortlisted for Family Business Award

Now in its fifth year, the Midlands Family Business Awards is a charitable initiative organised by The Wilson Organisation and showcases the achievements of family businesses and their leaders, giving the region’s best run family businesses the chance to shine.

Today, it continues to be run by members of the Chudley family and has won numerous awards for customer service, value for money, facilities, food and industry leadership.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 13th November 2014 at Nottingham Trent University.

Sundial Group’s Marketing Director, Jo Chudley, said:

“We pride ourselves on providing excellent service so being shortlisted in this category is great recognition for Sundial Group. This award is especially important to us as it acknowledges the support from all of our family members and shareholders over the years. We are very much looking forward to the event and hope for success on the night."
Sundial Group’s Chudbus Returns this Summer
19/08/2014
After almost letting the Sundial 'Chudbus' go into retirement, Sundial Group is delighted to share that it has been saved and has returned to the road this summer!

With brand new signage inside and out, a new Teamscapes zone on the top deck and an interactive approach with bean bags for comfort, the Chudbus has never looked better.

Our bright red routemaster is back visiting booking agents up and down the country, giving them the chance to experience how unique we are.

So far, we’ve been to Chelmsford, Derby, Spalding, Worcester and Swindon to hold events for Inntel, Zibrant, Capita, Infotel and BookoTel, using the bus to deliver some of our Teamscapes team building activities including Webmaster and Blockheads, and serve up a ‘grab and go’ nutritious lunch to employees.

As a committee member of Meetings Industry Meetings Needs, Sundial Group’s Managing Director, Tim Chudley, drove the bus to Zibrant’s head office in Derby to take part in the Big Sleep Out, where everyone slept outdoors in cardboard boxes to raise money for the homeless. The evening’s event featured a range of fundraising activities including a fair, a treasure hunt and a silent auction.

Sundial Group’s Director of Sales, Mia Butler, who has been on the road with the bus this summer, said:

“We are thrilled that the bus is back in action as it has become an important symbol in portraying Sundial's history and values. The tour is so much fun and it’s great to see how excited clients get when the bus arrives at their offices!”

The Chudbus will also be joining Sundial Group at the World of Learning Exhibition at the NEC Birmingham on 30th September. The bus will be home to our Sensory Zone where visitors will be invited to come on board and learn about our powerful approach to team building.

If you would like to learn more about Sundial Group and our team building activities, we can arrange for the Chudbus to come and visit you at your offices. Contact us on info@sundialgroup.com for more information.
