Sundial Group Reports a 20% Swing from Day Meetings to Residential
21/01/2016
Sundial Group has reported a reversal of previous booking patterns, with a 20% swing in bookings from day events to longer residential meetings. This is in stark contrast to an eight year trend of increasing demand for day meetings.

Comparative booking patterns between 2015 and 2016 at Sundial‘s three venues; Highgate House, Barnett Hill and Woodside, indicate that meeting planners are moving back to holding extended events, often adding private dining and team building, to enhance their meeting experiences.

Whilst some elements of day meetings can be replaced by technology the real value of face to face comes from a more immersive experience. It‘s great to see this on the increase.

Along with three dedicated meeting venues, Sundial Group has grown over the last 50 years to include a team building company and a venue finding agency. Today, it continues to be run by members of the Chudley family and is award-winning in customer service, value for money, food and industry leadership.

Sundial is amongst 11 finalists in the Midlands category and results will be determined through a combination of a judging panel and an online vote for the People‘s Choice Award, determined solely by the public. To vote for Sundial Group, visit http://www.familybusinessunited.com/resources/family-business-of-the-year-regions/midlands-and-east-anglia/

Tim Chudley, Managing Director of Sundial Group, said:

Our family values are at the heart of everything we do here at Sundial Group, so we‘re thrilled to be shortlisted for the Family Business Awards. It is fantastic recognition for us, especially as it acknowledges the support from all of our family members and shareholders over the years. Now that we‘ve been shortlisted, we‘d be really grateful if everyone could take the time to vote for us.

Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United, said:

"We are delighted to be able to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do."

The winners will be crowned during an awards ceremony at the May Fair Hotel in London on June 2nd.
Sundial Venues Achieve High Sustainability Rating
02/12/2015
During a week when Climate Change has very much been on the public agenda with the COP 21 summit in Paris, Sundial Group is delighted to have achieved a high sustainability rating by CDP, an independent organisation which helps companies measure their environmental impact.

For a company such as Sundial Group, which runs conferences and events in country house venues, the issue of climate change and energy efficiency has always been a particular challenge. Notably, because its venues are historic buildings which date back to a time long before the term ‘carbon footprint‘ was coined. Sundial‘s challenge is to retro-fit low carbon facilities and services into their buildings whilst retaining and preserving their heritage.

CDP‘s assessment was two-fold. It first scored Sundial Group based on the quality and completeness of its response, of which it achieved 94% (vs a CPD SME average score of 60%).

By achieving over 50% in levels of response, Sundial qualified for CPD to go on and assess and rank them in a performance band. Out of a range of scores from A-E, Sundial ranked B (vs an average SME ranking of D).

The positive assessment gave Sundial a firm indication of its sustainability performance and also helped to provide greater focus on climate change for the business. Tim Chudley, Sundial Group‘s Managing Director, said:

The exercise of completing the CDP report was in itself a valuable process of analysis and review and has already provided us with a number of takeaways to help us improve our position on climate change further. I would encourage other companies to do the same. I‘m told that as first year submissions these scores are pretty good but we will not be resting on our laurels, there is still lots to do.

As much as 70 per cent of London-based employees in the hospitality industry are paid below the living wage, while the UK-wide figure is 65 per cent. Tim Chudley remains at the forefront of this movement to help raise awareness and encourage further take up of better pay within the hospitality industry.

Living Wage Foundation Acting Director, Sarah Vero, said:

Congratulations to Sundial Group and to Tim Chudley on becoming Living Wage Champion Award winners. With 2,000 employers now signed up, it is wonderful to have Sundial leading the way in the East Midlands. The leadership of responsible employers is making a profound difference in the lives of families and communities across the UK. Thank you very much for celebrating the Living Wage.

Commenting on the awards, Tim Chudley said:

On behalf of Sundial Group, I am absolutely thrilled to receive these awards as a representative of the hospitality industry. I think the hospitality sector has been dragging its heels about paying their frontline people as professionals and people that really drive the customer journey and satisfaction. I think it‘s time that everyone in hotels and hospitality started paying their people properly.

The assessment looked at all aspects of the visitor experience, from rooms and facilities to customer service and food, and also focused on the recent changes made to our venues as part of a major refurbishment programme launched last year.

Sundial Group's Managing Director, Tim Chudley, said:

We're incredibly proud to have retained our 4 stars by Visit England under their Quality in Tourism scheme. The accolade reflects our commitment to providing an excellent guest experience and is also testament to the hard work of our teams at Highgate House and Barnett Hill."

Woodside Strikes Gold Once Again
13/07/2015
Sundial Group's Warwickshire based hotel and conference centre, Woodside, has received ‘VenueVerdict's Gold Standard Accreditation' for Q2 by BDRC Continental, the UK's largest independent research consultancy.

The accreditation, based on customer feedback results from July 2014 to June 2015, is testament to the venue's ongoing dedication to providing exceptional customer service.

500,000 Honeybees Check In at Sundial Group
15/06/2015
Sundial Group is buzzing with excitement after installing bee hives at each of its three meeting venues.

Over 150,000 honeybees have each arrived at Highgate House in Northamptonshire, Woodside in Warwickshire and Barnett Hill in Surrey, taking up residence in three specially constructed hives within the grounds.

The hives, managed by bio-diversity champions Plan Bee, are part of the group‘s ongoing commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment, whilst helping to reverse the decline in bee population. Deemed as the ‘world‘s hardest workers‘, the bees also reflect Sundial‘s values and dedication to its customers.

They will be accompanied by bee-keeping lessons and ongoing support, allowing everyone at Sundial the opportunity to become actively involved with the everyday life of the bees. Each venue will also receive its very own honey produced on-site by the Sundial bees which will be made available to customers.

Bees are tireless pollinators of trees, plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits. Not only are they essential to the health of our eco-system; they are vital to the world‘s agricultural economy. 90% of food worldwide is provided by just 100 crop species. 71 of these are dependent on honey bees, so the serious decline in bees in the UK is a threat to future food supplies.

Sundial‘s Group‘s Managing Director, Tim Chudley, put on his bee suit to welcome the new arrivals:

The hospitality sector is an extremely competitive one, with customers seeking excellence in both service and products. Customers now expect providers to be both ethical and sustainable. Supporting the declining bee population is our way of putting something into the environment, and making use of our extensive grounds. An added bonus for our customers is that they will benefit from enjoying the highest quality honey, made in partnership with Sundial.

Having already chosen BeeKind as our toiletry products of choice across all three of our venues, installing our own bee hives was the next logical step for us. Bees really resonate with Sundial and our hard-working ethos – like us, they get results!

Sundial Group Shortlisted for Family Business Award

Sundial Group is thrilled to announce it has been shortlisted for a Service Excellence award at the Midlands Family Business Awards.

Now in its fifth year, the Midlands Family Business Awards is a charitable initiative organised by The Wilson Organisation and showcases the achievements of family businesses and their leaders, giving the region‘s best run family businesses the chance to shine.

The Sundial story began back in 1964 when Diana and Michael Chudley bought Highgate House in Northamptonshire and transformed it into a home for their nine children, whilst also running it as a guest house. It went on to become one of the first country house conference centres of its kind in the UK and the family later acquired two additional county venues; Woodside in Warwickshire and Barnett Hill in Surrey.

Along with three dedicated meeting venues, Sundial Group has grown over the last 50 years to include a team building company and a venue finding agency. Today, it continues to be run by members of the Chudley family and has won numerous awards for customer service, value for money, facilities, food and industry leadership.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 13th November 2014 at Nottingham Trent University.

Sundial Group‘s Marketing Director, Jo Chudley, said:

We pride ourselves on providing excellent service so being shortlisted in this category is great recognition for Sundial Group. This award is especially important to us as it acknowledges the support from all of our family members and shareholders over the years. We are very much looking forward to the event and hope for success on the night."
Sundial Group‘s Chudbus Returns this Summer
19/08/2014
After almost letting the Sundial 'Chudbus' go into retirement, Sundial Group is delighted to share that it has been saved and has returned to the road this summer!

With brand new signage inside and out, a new Teamscapes zone on the top deck and an interactive approach with bean bags for comfort, the Chudbus has never looked better.

Our bright red routemaster is back visiting booking agents up and down the country, giving them the chance to experience how unique we are.

So far, we‘ve been to Chelmsford, Derby, Spalding, Worcester and Swindon to hold events for Inntel, Zibrant, Capita, Infotel and BookoTel, using the bus to deliver some of our Teamscapes team building activities including Webmaster and Blockheads, and serve up a ‘grab and go‘ nutritious lunch to employees.

As a committee member of Meetings Industry Meetings Needs, Sundial Group‘s Managing Director, Tim Chudley, drove the bus to Zibrant‘s head office in Derby to take part in the Big Sleep Out, where everyone slept outdoors in cardboard boxes to raise money for the homeless. The evening‘s event featured a range of fundraising activities including a fair, a treasure hunt and a silent auction.

Sundial Group‘s Director of Sales, Mia Butler, who has been on the road with the bus this summer, said:

We are thrilled that the bus is back in action as it has become an important symbol in portraying Sundial's history and values. The tour is so much fun and it‘s great to see how excited clients get when the bus arrives at their offices!

The Chudbus will also be joining Sundial Group at the World of Learning Exhibition at the NEC Birmingham on 30th September. The bus will be home to our Sensory Zone where visitors will be invited to come on board and learn about our powerful approach to team building.

If you would like to learn more about Sundial Group and our team building activities, we can arrange for the Chudbus to come and visit you at your offices. Contact us on info@sundialgroup.com for more information.

Sundial Group Undertakes Major Investment Programme for 2014
09/12/2013
Sundial Group, the multi-award winning hospitality events group, is undertaking a major investment programme across its three conference venues in early 2014. The initial phases of work will see about half a million pounds worth of improvements with a similar sum of investment expected later in 2014.

Much of the programme has been influenced by research carried out amongst the Group's customers in 2013, to find out which areas they most wanted to see improvements in. These included three key areas:

Bedrooms

All three venues will benefit from bedroom refurbishments, incorporating general modernisation of rooms and their facilities, including new furniture and fittings, as well as improved bathroom and shower facilities.

Public Areas

There are major plans to change Highgate House's main entrance in order to give guests a more convenient direct access to the venue and, in the process, help create a more impactful first impression upon their arrival. Highgate House's bar/guest welcome area will also undergo a complete transformation with a newly designed layout including new flooring, furniture and seating arrangements.

Conference Rooms

Numerous conference rooms at all three venues will also be redecorated and refreshed as part of the programme.

The investment programme will commence from January 2014 and work will be carried out at carefully chosen times to ensure minimal customer disruption.
Sundial Group Chooses BeeKind toiletries for its in-room amenities
29/11/2013
Sundial Group has chosen Gilchrist and Soame's ‘BeeKind' toiletry range for its in-room products, to be provided at each of its country house venues.

From November 2013, all three Sundial venues (Highgate House in Northamptonshire, Woodside in Warwickshire and Barnett Hill in Surrey) will offer BeeKind to their over-night guests.

The BeeKind range uses ingredients of honey with organic extracts of red clover, calendula, lemon grass and chamomile to give a soothing and relaxing effect, whilst also doing good to the environment.

The BeeKind collection has been developed featuring Gilchrist and Soames' signature formations and are free from parabens, phthalates, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA, propylene glycol, artificial colours and dyes.

They are produced in the UK and the packaging is also environmentally advanced, deploying a readily-recyclable tube made from HDPE which is eco-friendly. Furthermore, net proceeds from our purchase of BeeKind products go to support honey bees and sustainable pollination research.

Tim Chudley, Managing Director of Sundial Group said:

"The in-room products we choose for our venues are the most personal products our guests come into contact with. It is really important for us to not only find a luxurious range that they can indulge in at the end of a long day, but one that is environmentally responsible too. BeeKind offers the ideal combination.

Choosing BeeKind is yet another way we can work towards meeting our environmental responsibilities and help minimise the impact our operations have on the environment."

Sundial Group Reports Increase in Healthcare Event Bookings
02/04/2013
Sundial Group has announced record bookings in healthcare events, with revenue growth of more than 30% year-on-year.

Tim Chudley, Sundial Group Managing Director, credited the sales uplift to the group's recent Compliant Venues accreditation status which it was awarded last year.

He said:

‘Our Compliant Venues accreditation and training appears to have given bookers in the Healthcare industry increased confidence in us.

Knowing that we have been assessed and trained in the regulatory and compliance rules of their sector, they feel more reassured than ever that we are best placed to manage their events with expertise and sensitivity. The focused environment Sundial Group provides, matches the evolving healthcare sector's requirement for high quality, fit-for-purpose meetings'

Historically, perceptions of the healthcare sector have been focused on luxurious and extravagant meetings at the cost of content and impartiality. There has since been a shift-change, with an increased demand for transparency within the sector. Sundial Group is one of the many venue providers helping to change perceptions to deliver more appropriate benchmarks for all healthcare meetings and events.

The Compliant Venues accreditation criteria which Sundial Group was required to meet covered a range of areas including; sales and marketing, location, suitability, facilities, service and costs. Sundial staff members also took part in training to help them gain a deeper understanding of the sector's regulatory codes in order to offer a more informed service to their Healthcare customers.

It is estimated that there are over 100,000 meetings in the healthcare sector annually, generating some £378m in spend across a broad range of groups: National Health Service, patients groups, corporate industry and scientific bodies such as medical associations.

About Compliant Venues

Compliant Venues is an independent consultancy providing accreditation and training solutions for meeting venues, enabling them to work more effectively within the healthcare sector.
Venue Awards Speak Volumes for Sundial Group
02/04/2013
With numerous awards already behind them, Sundial Venues is celebrating a new wave of accolades for their achievements in 2012. Retaining the Value for Money award, Sundial Venues are proud to receive the news that they also achieved ‘Gold Standard' accreditation at countryside meeting venue Highgate House and ‘Highly Commended' at both Woodside and Barnett Hill amongst being put forward for a number of additional short listings for other accreditations. Sundial Group's Agency Sales Manager Mia Butler also received the prestigious HBAA (Hotel Bookings Agents Association) ‘Tim Gasson' Award in recognition of her contributions to the industry.

Assessing a venue's awards before making a decision where to put your business is extremely important. The awards are a guarantee to a venue's credibility, quality of service and value for money. These awards set a high standard and a tough competition within the industry. The ability therefore to retain recognition in a particular category year after such as Sundial Group has with the Value for Money award, is an outstanding achievement.

Tim Chudley, Sundial Group's Managing Director comments "Sundial Group has received the Value Money accreditation since the very start of the VenueVerdict awards. We are very proud that we have set a standard in the industry and year after year are continuing to lead the way in a high quality service and a reasonable pricing structure".

Such important and much sought-after awards are looked upon as important milestones for anyone in the meeting and conference industry. Tim Chudley continues, "We didn't just win one award, we won at all three of our countryside hotel meeting venues. This demonstrates that we really do put the customer's needs and requirements first and take pride in the quality of product we offer".

In the current economic climate and threat of a triple-dip recession, a Value for Money accolade from a prestigious organization such as the BDRC Continental is a particularly important feature to be able to offer.

Tim Chudley explains "it is always important for customers to be able to see the direction a business is heading in. It provides security in the services on offer and a company that continuously works annually to meet and beat their own standards says volumes about company ethics and the staff in their employment".

Businesses that are continuously honoured with awards and award nominations have obviously learnt to listen to their clients in order to successfully cater to public demand. They are, as a result, less likely to be affected by the financial environment and clients are able to clearly trust in company values, policies and procedures as well as the efficient organisation that is running behind the scenes.

The ‘Cook off' is a time-limited event where the eight finalists will be required to create a single dish from a mystery basket of ingredients, comprising of fresh produce, grains and three proteins. Each chef will be given 15 minutes before the ‘cook off' to decide on the dish they are going to produce and to write a menu card for the judges.

The final takes place on Saturday 9 February at Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre in Bedfordshire where Miller and Gaskins will battle it out with 6 other chefs to become the IACC's UK National Champion.

The winner will then be given a complimentary round trip to the IACC's annual conference in Illinois, Chicago this March, with the chance to compete for the final allocade of IACC's Global Chef of the Year.

Sundial Group Sponsors IACC Future Leaders Lunch
02/02/2013
Sundial Group was delighted to sponsor the International Association of Conference Centre's (IACC) Future Leaders lunch this November, at Lensbury Conference Centre in Teddington, Middlesex.

The lunch was a new IACC initiative, inviting event management students from Greenwich University to meet with key industry leaders.

The initiative was designed to enable students to better understand the role of the IACC and to give them an opportunity to put questions to influential industry leaders face-to-face. The delegates were welcomed by Mark Cooper, the IACC's CEO.

Industry leaders themselves (attending from a wide variety of backgrounds) also had much to gain from the experience; insight and ideas into what students saw as the future of the sector, as well as what they are looking for from future employers. Examples of some of the development ideas discussed were ambitions for 'iconic' shorter session meetings and a desire for opportunities to exercise their philanthropic beliefs when attending meetings.

Mark Cooper stated, "feedback from emerging industry leaders is essential as we step into a new era for IACC and for the in the meetings industry. Their evaluations, observations, and contributions will continue to help us shape the future and to continue to provide exceptional meeting experiences around the globe."

The lunch formed part of the wider IACC European Annual General Meeting and Conference ‘Turning Imagination into Innovation'; a platform designed to fuel discussions on the future of conferencing amongst key industry players with the ambition to create exceptional meeting experiences.

Sundial is proud to be a long-standing founder member and supporter of the IACC, with Sundial's CEO Tim Chudley a past Global President.

Sundial Group successfully accredited by ‘Compliant Venues‘ for Healthcare sector events
12/10/2012
Sundial Group is delighted to announce that its three venues have undertaken an accreditation and training solution designed to enable meeting venues to work competently with healthcare clients.
Highgate House in Northamptonshire, Barnett Hill in Surrey and Woodside in Warwickshire have achieved Green accreditation status and bookers can be confident when booking a Sundial Venue that they are appropriate in understanding the regulatory and compliance rules as applied by bookers in the healthcare sector.

‘Compliant Venues‘ is an independent agency which was formed in response to an increasing need for healthcare meeting organisers to ensure their events meet internal and industry codes of practice and are carried out in appropriate environments.

Working with an accredited venue provides Corporate Healthcare organisations the opportunity to reduce their compliance risk and enhance their approval process by using a clear and recognised metric to support their choice of venues for meeting activities. The solution draws upon the guidelines issued by various UK healthcare regulatory bodies, which makes transparent the criteria generally accepted to make a venue compliant. The metric developed covers sales and marketing, location, suitability, facilities, service and cost resulting in a Green, (fully accredited) or Amber, (accredited with specific caveats) status.

Tim Chudley, Managing Director of Sundial Group said, To have an accreditation which highlights us as a suitable meeting and conference venue for the healthcare sector is of great value. He continued, To also have staff at each of our venues who have completed the training required as part of the accreditation process and become our healthcare champions, will benefit our customers in the healthcare sector hugely.
Mark Handforth of Compliant Venues said, The Sundial ethos is visible in everyone you meet and the process, in particularly training of the sales and operational teams, demonstrated this. Just hours after the training session there were examples of them taking ownership of the information shared to benefit their clients.
Sundial Group owns and operates three country house conference hotels across the UK; Barnett Hill in Surrey, Northamptonshire meeting venue Highgate House and Woodside in Kenilworth, all are superb, award-winning conference, training and event venues
in accessible, UK locations. The locations are well positioned for events across the healthcare sector for internal staff or healthcare professional audiences.

Their creativity, levels of engagement with their online audience coupled with the shear breadth of social networking accounts meant that they were clear winners in this category. Plus there was clear evidence that this activity had actually helped them to achieve their business objectives - vital in any campaign."

Now in their fifth year, the HBAA annual awards celebrate member agencies, hotels and venues that set the benchmark of best practice within the industry. The social media award was introduced this year in recognition of the impact community and social sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Google+ have on marketing, business communications, customer service, brand recognition, networking and lead generation.

Sundial Venues multi-award winning Northamptonshire conference hotel, picturesque Warwickshire meeting venue and Surrey conference hotel are owned and operated by Sundial Group.
