It’s that time of year again and the same questions about what to buy or what to do to delight our Mums or those maternal figures close to you this Mother’s Day arrive once more.

You can’t avoid the television adverts doing their utmost to persuade us that the best way to mark the day is with jewellery, flowers or chocolates. But what do our Mums really want on Mother’s Day?

As a busy venue playing host to events on a daily basis the H Suite pride themselves on working with outstanding caterers. The H Suite focus on ensuring that their guests, be it for a corporate meeting, conference or celebration can enjoy the best food that Birmingham has to offer.

As anyone who has dealt with large scale catering will know you can often be left with surplus food – even after satiating hungry guests.

Never a fan of waste the team at the H Suite have started an initiative to ensure that any leftover food from the venue is used. Whilst the team are always keen to sample themselves their plan avoids the risk of growing their own waistlines whilst giving back to the most vulnerable people within their community.

The H Suite have teamed up with Let’s Feed Brum, a Birmingham based organisation who provides food, clothing and bedding for those in the city who either have no home or are in temporary accommodation. The organisation’s aim is to reach people who are in these situations and support them through conversations.

The figures tell the story of the amount of need that the organisation meets.
• 80-100 people come to their soup kitchen every single night.
• 700 hot meals are served every single week.
• Over 50 sleeping bags are handed out every week.
• Roughly 40,000 hot drinks are served every year.

Hip Hip Hooray as The H Suite plays host

Chamber member, central Birmingham event venue, the H Suite have completed their brand vision with some alliterative room naming.
Their 3 impressive suites in Edgbaston are to be known as the Hamilton, Hudson and Hemming suites. All names arising, not only from their common initial letter, but from imposing people in their respective fields. A king, a formula one racing driving and a celebrated explorer – a collection of strong, resourceful and adaptable individuals. Like these figures, the team at the H Suite hope that their newly named rooms will act as platforms for important life moments, celebrations and successes for their guests.
The chandelier clad Hamilton Suite boasts a seating capacity of 600 and standing room for over 1000 people. It’s recently proved a popular location for events from weddings, boxing nights and Caribbean inspired celebrations.
The Hudson and Hemming Suites are smaller in stature but no less flexible with options for dining, bar access, dancefloor and adjoining syndicate rooms to boot.

Tips for Choosing a venue

When it comes to planning an event, looking for a suitable venue can feel like looking for a needle in the haystack.
It’s often easier to know what you don’t want than what you do. It can become one of those tasks that feels impossible to begin, despite us all knowing that advance planning is critical to success.
In reality, the choice of venue boils down to 4 key decisions all essentially driven by the needs of your delegates.
Firstly, in the words of Phil and Kirstie it’s location, location, location. You’ve probably already considered this. You might be looking for a venue within a reasonable proximity to attendees’ homes or places of work. If many attendees will be travelling from out of the area, a venue near the airport or hotels will be beneficial. Don’t forget to consider traffic, transportation and parking.
A venue with ample parking is what dreams are made of. If that’s not the case, are there parking lots nearby which attendees can access and use? If there is no parking available, you’ll need to think outside the box:
• Can you reserve nearby parking spaces for attendees and include the cost in the ticket price?
• Provide a way for attendees to share taxis or car share. It might not be the Peter Kay experience, but it could be your solution.

Decision 2 is around capacity. Ensure you have adequate capacity and that the food and drink minimum orders will work for you. Be sure not to go overboard – there is nothing worse than a half empty room. Remember larger venues can often section up rooms and be flexible. Speak to the venue event manager and look for solutions even when the size advertised doesn’t seem to fit.

Next is the layout and atmosphere. Can you achieve the format you need? Round tables, classroom style, board room? Again, bigger venues are likely to have more flexible options and may also be able to offer guidance if you’re unsure what will work. Remember, this is their bread and butter.

And finally, a date! And therefore, it is best not to put off the planning. The best venues will get booked up earlier, simple. If you’re able to be flexible on dates, offering up a choice, then you may find you have greater ability to negotiate on price and make use of quieter dates. Forget the worm, the early bird can catch the best date as well as the best price.
