Newport is the site of the last large-scale armed uprising in Britain. The Newport rising in 1839 was lead by the chartists, who were trying to free their comrades who were being held in Newport prison.
Actor Gareth David-Lloyd (torchwood) and Rap group Goldie Looking Chain both come from Newport, Wales. The city is home to the university of Wales and has two main campuses in Newport.
The M4 motorway is within a mile of Newport city centre and several main A and B roads are within easy reach. The great western main railway link passes through the heart of the city, which stops at the Newport railway station. The city is well connected with Cardiff providing several rail and bus routes to the capital.
